Howdy.
Pull up a rocking chair, have a seat.
Ice tea? Something stronger, maybe?
Good, good. Good to see y’all. How you been?
Welcome to the Painted Porch from me, the Southern Stoic.
Why Painted Porch? Well, you probably already know all this, but that’s the what started the stoic movement way back when. Stoa comes from the meaning of the painted porch where the early stoics would gather.
Painted porches also tie in real nice to my southern roots and heritage. Down South, porches are the gathering place. the meeting place. Where you sit and rock or swing, cause it’s too dang hot in the house. Where Granny shelled peas. Pop would smoke a pipe or cigar. Where kids ‘camped’ out in the summer, skeeters be damned.
That’s what the inspiration for this Substack is all about. I recently studied many of the early Stoics, primarily Seneca, and realized that a lot of the ‘southern wisdom’ that my Pop and grandparents gave me is very much what the stoics thought and wrote about. But we’ll dive into that as we go along.
What to expect here? I guess a couple of emails a week, probably some recordings, I like to write when inspired, not to meet a schedule. And it’s mostly for me, but I’m damn sure glad to have you come along.
Yeah, I’m Chief Chuck. Some of you have come over from that email list. Appreciate you making the trip over. Also would appreciate you passing the word along if you know someone who might enjoy this.
Well, it’s Christmas time, so I won’t be around much, going to the woods next weekend to hunt (mostly sit in the woods) and enjoy some family time and some food.
I’ll see y’all back here in January, take care and have a blessed and happy and safe holiday season, allright?
See y’all later
Well hello my good friend
Happy Holidays Chuck! Miss ya my friend!
